East West Movie Magic: Shadow Magic as Hybrid Art with Third Space
Volume 1, Number 1, May 2002
by Monica Mak
Article Description
In this paper Monica Mak attempts to demonstrate that Shadow Magic, a period drama by Chinese-American filmmaker Ann Hu, is the director's cultural strategy for replacing the notion of a dichotomy dividing Chinese artistic practices from their Western counterparts. In short, Mak wants to argue that Shadow Magic as a cultural strategy is about, by, and for a hybrid visual culture created by a Chinese-Western convergence, collaboration and/or crowd.
