Sheng Project: A Flâneur’s Archive
Volume 16, Number 4, July/August 2017
by Gao Shiming
Article Description
A collaboration between Long March Project, Beijing, and China Academy of Arts’ Institute for Contemporary Art and Social Thoughts, Hangzhou, the Sheng Project is drawn from the personal archive of Zheng Shengtian but is not intended to be a historical retrospective. Instead, by inviting curators and historians to venture into the subjective realm of Sheng’s personal archive, the project is aimed at excavating how his personal trajectories of teaching, researching, curating, art-making, and institution-building over the past six decades might evoke new lines of inquiry that differ from or even challenge the existing Western-centric narrative of art history.
