John L. Tancock received his M.A. from Downing College, Cambridge, in 1967 and his Ph.D. from the Courtauld Institute, University of London, in 1977. From 1967 to 1972 he was Associate Curator at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Curator of the Rodin Museum. During his subsequent career at Sotheby’s, he specialized in European Impressionist and Modern paintings, but has been actively involved in the development of contemporary Chinese art since 2008. He is presently advisor to Chambers Fine Art, New York and Beijing. He was co-curator of Duchamp and/or/in China, at the Ullens Center of Contemporary Art (UCCA), Beijing, in 2013, and in 2015 he contributed essays on Ai Weiwei to the catalogues of the Ai Weiwei exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, and Andy Warhol—Ai Weiwei, at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne. He was also co-author of Ai Weiwei: Beijing Photographs 1993-2003, published by MIT Press in 2018.
