Karen Smith has worked as a curator and critic specializing in contemporary art practice for the past fifteen years. Her recent curatorial projects include: The Real Thing (Tate Liverpool, UK, 2007), The Wasteland: Jia Aili (Platform China, 2007), Oxidation: Xu Ruotao (Platform China, 2007), Illumination: Ai Weiwei (Mary Boone Gallery, New York, 2008), Qinghai Plateau: Liu Xiaodong (Mary Boone Gallery, New York, 2008), and Subtlety (Platform China, 2008). She is the author of Nine Lives: The Birth of Avant-Garde Art in New China (Timezone 8, 2008) and the forthcoming monograph on Ai Weiwei for Phaidon’s Contemporary Artists series.
