1Mami Kataoka
Qiu Zhijie is a professor at the School of Inter-media Art of the China Art Academy, the director of Total Art Studio at the China Art Academy, and a member of the supervisor team at the Art and Social Thoughts Institute, Beijing. Qiu’s artworks take a variety of forms, such as calligraphy, painting, photography, video, installation, and theater. His solo exhibitions have been held in art museums such as Haus of World Culture, Berlin (2009), Ullens Contemporary Art Center, Beijing (2009), and Zendai Museum of Modern Art, Shanghai (2008). He has participated in exhibitions such as the 53rd Venice Biennale, the 25th Sao Paulo Biennale, and China’s New Art, Post-1989 (1993). Qiu has been teaching at the Total Art Studio since 2003, proposing ways to develop the concept of “total art” (an awareness that artistic creation cannot be uprooted from its historical and cultural background) in both formal academic and professional contexts. Qiu has curated numerous exhibitions, including Phenomena and Image (1996), which was the first media art show in China
