Pan Gongkai
Pan Gongkai is a highly respected theorist in Chinese art history and an influential ink painter. Before assuming the presidency of the Central Academy of Fine Arts (Beijing) in 2001, he was President of the China Academy of Fine Arts (Hangzhou) from 1996. Pan Gongkai has been awarded an honorary doctorate degree from the San Francisco Art Institute. As an innovator of Chinese traditional painting, Pan has had many solo exhibitions in galleries and museums, internationally and nationally. His major publications include History of Chinese Painting and An Analytical Study of Pan Tianshou’s Painting Techniques. His most recent undertaking is redefining modernity and modernization within Chinese art. He has organized four symposiums concerning this topic in four different cities: Hong Kong, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Ningbo.
