Shahidul Alam

Shahidul Alam obtained a Ph.D. in chemistry before taking up photography and concentrating on issues of social justice. He founded the Drik Picture Library, Bangladesh; Majority World, London, UK and the Pathshala South Asian Media Institute, Bangladesh, and is a director of the Chobi Mela Festival, Bangladesh. An honorary fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and visiting professor at Sunderland University, Alam has chaired the World Press Photo jury. A new media pioneer, he also introduced e-mail to Bangladesh. His book My Journey as a Witness (Skira, 2011) has been described as “the most important book ever written by a photographer” by John Morris, the legendary former picture editor of Life magazine.
