1Shao-Lan Hertel
Shao-Lan Hertel has been working as an associate researcher at the Art History Institute of the Freie Universität Berlin since 2012. She is currently completing her doctoral studies in east Asian art history with a dissertation on developments and
transformations in calligraphy in twentieth- and twenty-first- century China. From 2010 to 2011, Hentel received a Chinese government scholarship to study at the Modern Calligraphy Research Center, China Academy of Art, Hangzhou. Her writing has
appeared in Meister und Schüler/Master and Disciple: Tradition, Transfer, Transformation (VDG Weimar, 2016), Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon: Die Bildenden
Künstler aller Zeiten und Völker (De Gruyter, 2015), and Huang Binhong and the
Evolution of Modern Ideas in Art (China Academy of Fine Arts Publishing House, 2014). She is co-editor of Elegant Gathering in a Scholar’s Garden: Studies in East Asian Art in Honor of Jeong-hee Lee-Kalisch (VDG Weimar, 2015).
