1Tao Yongbai
Tao Yongbai is an art critic and art historian based in Beijing. She started her career as a Chinese language teacher and in 1979 became a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Art, where she worked until her retirement in 1998. Her ground-breaking research on the history of Chinese oil painting was published in the catalogue Chinese Oil Paintings 1700–1985 in 1988. A selection of Tao’s art criticism articles entitled The World of Painting, Thoughts of A Female Critic was published in 1995. Tao has focused her research on Chinese women in art since the late 1980s. In 1995, Tao co-founded the Women’s Arts and Culture Research Society and co-curated the iconic exhibition and symposium Century Woman in Beijing in 1998. Tao’s articles on women artists were collected in the anthology Emerging from the Margins, published in 2016.
