Thomas J. Berghuis, Ph.D., is Curator of Chinese art at the Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation and a visiting scholar at the Center for China in the World at the Australian National University, Canberra, Australia. In 2012 Berghuis worked as a research team member for the Power Institute at the University of Sydney in Australia on a pilot study examining modern and contemporary art practices and historiographies in Southeast Asia, supported by a grant from the Getty Foundation, Los Angeles, as part of their funding of research and research collaborations on Connecting Art Histories across the globe. He is the author of Performance Art in China (Timezone 8 Limited, 2006), the first major art-historical study on performance art in China. His writings have been published in prominent journals and art magazines including Positions: East Asian Cultures Critique, The Journal of Visual Art Practice, and Third Text. He is also a member of the editorial team of the newly established Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art. He has also curated several exhibitions of contemporary Asian art, including most recently the international group exhibition Suspended Histories, at Museum van Loon, Amsterdam (2013).
