Emergency Biennale
Volume 12, Number 3, May/June 2013
by Evelyne Jouanno
Article Description
In this case study, Evelyne Jouanno speaks about the Emergency Biennale which was established in February 2005 in order to emphasize the urgent necessity for a re-examination of the critical commitment of art and exhibitions in today’s globalized world. It started as a curatorial action with two main goals: to create a counterpart to Moscow’s entry into the ever-growing network of international Biennials, and on the other hand, to mobilize and bring together as many artists as possible to engage in the plight of Chechnya, then being crushed by Russia.
