In this presentation, Yongwoo Lee talks about the Gwangju Biennale which was called upon to perform a specific role--that of highlighting the 1980 Gwangju Democracy Movement as an integral part of the city's modern history. Therefore, the Gwangju Biennale differs from other biennials in its genesis, and serves as a site in which the biennale both produced and consumed around the complex socio-political discourse.
