Documenting Exhibitions of Contemporary Chinese Art During the 1980s and 1990s
Volume 16, Number 6, November/December 2017
by Anthony Yung
Article Description
In this essay, Anthony Yung asks the following questions: In the history
of contemporary Chinese art, what was the role of exhibition documentation? How did ideas, techniques, and strategies of exhibition documentation change? How was documentation used to create a critique, an alternative platform, and a medium for artistic experimentation? And, finally, an important yet challenging question: How should researchers today who have not had the opportunity to experience these exhibitions personally, evaluate the influence of the quality and quantity of documentation on our understanding of their scale, scope, and historical impact?
