Dissociative Sociability and the Mirror Effect: On Xing Danwen’s Socio-Optics

Volume 18, Number 1, January/February 2019
by Mostafa Heddaya

Article Description

Mostafa Heddaya looks at the curatorial premises of a 2017 survey exhibition featuring the work of Xing Danwen. In it Heddaya identifies curator Tarek Abou El Fetouh’s approach to representing her work, which draws upon the writing of Jean Genet, and then ventures into ideas of what Heddaya refers to as a quality of “dissociative sociability” and “mirror effects” that are consistent elements embedded within her twenty-five year career.
