Cai Tao is a professor at the School of Arts and Humanities, Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts and previously worked at the Guangdong Museum of Art. Specializing in the research and curation of modern Chinese art, his work focuses on the impact of war and social change on artistic practice. His significant contributions include the 2007 exhibition Floating Avant-Garde: The Chinese Independent Art Society (1935) and Modernist Art in Guangzhou, Shanghai and Tokyo, and the recent 2023 monograph Between the Nation and the Artist: The Anti-Japanese Propaganda Mural in Huanghelou (1938) and the Turning Point of Modern Chinese Art.
