Shannon May is a doctoral candidate at the University of California, Berkeley. Her interest in contemporary artists who contemplate their role in China’s current transformation combines her previous work in Chinese cinema and music with her current research on the politics and process of the planned modernization of China’s rural agricultural population. Her writing has appeared in publications such as the Far Eastern Economic Review and the Washington Post.
